RSS Aggregator > Download > Manual install

This install procedure is provided in case you have difficulty with the simple install procedure. If you haven't tried the simple install, we suggest you give it a go before using the manual method.

Requirements

The Aggregator's requirements are largely driven by those of the .NET framework (see below):

Although Internet Explorer is a requirement, you can instruct the Aggregator to use your default browser (which could be Mozilla, for example) to display pages.

Technically the Aggregator can use a dial-up connection, but you will only get the major benefits from RSS if you have an always-on Internet connection.

The Aggregator takes only a couple of megabytes of disk space.

.NET Framework

We suggest you use the procedure shown here to find out if you have a suitable version of the framework installed and, if not, install the latest version.

Manual installation

Start the manual install process by right clicking this icon, selecting 'Save Target As...' and saving the file to a directory on your PC. If your IT department has locked your PC down, you can install the Aggregator to a personal network drive and run it from there:

Download

Unzip the contents of the zip file to your chosen directory. If you are reinstalling do not extract file Settings.rssa unless you want to set the Aggregator back to its initial defaults.

You can now run the Aggregator by double-clicking RSSAggregator.exe. To have it start automatically, right click RSSAggregator.exe and click 'Copy'. Now go to your Start button and find your 'Startup' directory. Right click it and click 'Open' to have it start automatically just for you, or 'Open All Users' if you want the Aggregator to start regardless of who is using your PC. Right click the Startup window and click 'Paste Shortcut'. The Aggregator will now restart automatically when you run Windows.

If you copy the Aggregator to any directory but C:\Program Files\CITA\RSS Aggregator, you should right click RSSAggregator.exe and click 'Copy', then right click in the same directory and select 'Paste shortcut'. Now delete the existing shortcut 'called CITA RSS Aggregator'. Finally rename 'Shortcut to RSSAggregator.exe' to 'CITA RSS Aggregator'. This will ensure you can disable/enable running of the Aggregator when you start your PC.

Install the Subscription utility by double-clicking RSSSubscribe.exe.

Set up options and backup

The default configuration will work fine for most people. We describe some alternate configurations and how to find your settings file so you can back it up here.
