I recommend you use the Ten Foot products with Internet Explorer 7. That's because IE7 has the ability to zoom an entire page: both text and graphics. That makes it easy to read pages from your armchair. You do not, however, have to use IE7. To use the Ten Foot Browser, you need a recent version of Internet Explorer but you don't need IE at all to use any of the other products.

The Ten Foot products' requirements are largely driven by those of Internet Explorer 7: Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. The products can also run on some recent server products.

The products also run well under Microsoft Vista and do not cause any UAC prompts for administrator access.

Although Internet Explorer is a requirement to use the Ten Foot Browser, you can continue to use another browser (which could be Mozilla Firefox, for example) as your default web page viewer.

The products take only a couple of megabytes of disk space.

.NET Framework

Note that if you do not have version 2.0 of the Microsoft NET framework installed, the installation routine will detect that and offer to take you to a download page. There is no problem installing version 2.0 alongside 1.0 or 1.1. The preceding versions are not disturbed by installing a later one.

Updating an existing copy of the Ten Foot products

If you already have a copy of the products installed, you can use the procedure described below to install a later version. The install routine will not overwrite any changes (such as updates to the list of favourite pages).

You must, however, shut the all the products down before you install the new version.

Install instructions

Click this icon to install the products:

Install the products

You will see a warning message. Click 'Run' to install the products.

Alternatively, right click the icon and use 'Save as' to download the installer. You can then run the downloaded version by double-clicking it.

I suggest you accept the default install location. If you choose a different location, you will have to update the Launcher settings to point to the new location.

Unless you have a particular reason not to, I suggest you accept the default option of installing the products for everyone. That will minimise the potential for problems later on.

Alternate languages

By default, the Ten Foot Products work in English as used in the UK. If you prefer to see US English, copy the files from C:\Program Files\CITA\Ten Foot Products\US English Settings to the product directory: C:\Program Files\CITA\Ten Foot Products.

The Tailoring and Regionalisation Guide explains how to modify the settings files to implement different languages. If you decide to do this, please consider sending us a copy of your files for the benefit of other users.

Running the Launcher for the first time

Having installed the products successfully the Ten Foot Launcher will run automatically whenever you restart your PC. You can run it straight away by clicking the 'Ten Foot Launcher' link in the 'CITA Ten Foot Products' section of your program menu.

By default, you can activate the Launcher by 'double-pressing' the grey teletext button or the 'More' button on your remote.
